As physicists have gotten closer to find- ing the "unified theory" they have uncovered a great richness and profundity of mathematical structure in the laws of nature.
Indeed, the leading candidate for the ulti- mate unified theory says that there are in reality ten space dimensions.
The two most studied kinds of grand unified theory are based on symmetry groups called SU(5) and SO(10).
As wonderful as super- symmetry and grand unified theories are, they are not, in the view of most theorists, the end of the story.
In fact, there exist very promising theories, called "grand unified theories," in which this is true, and there are even more ambitious theories, called "super- string theories," in which all forces including gravity are unified.
